After 1742 it merged into the larger <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_of_the_Austrian_Succession\" title=\"War of the Austrian Succession\">War of the Austrian Succession<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Under the 1729 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treaty_of_Seville\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Treaty of Seville\">Treaty of Seville<\/a>, the British had agreed not to trade with the Spanish colonies. To verify the treaty, the Spanish were permitted to board British vessels in Spanish waters. After one such incident in 1731, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Jenkins_%28master_mariner%29\" title=\"Robert Jenkins (master mariner)\">Robert Jenkins<\/a>, captain of the ship <i>Rebecca<\/i>, claimed that the Spanish coast guard had severed his ear. The British government, which was determined to continue its drive toward commercial and military domination of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantic\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Atlantic\">Atlantic<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oceanic_basin\" title=\"Oceanic basin\">basin<\/a>, used this incident as an excuse to wage war against Spain in the Caribbean. In <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1738\" title=\"1738\">1738<\/a> Jenkins exhibited his <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pickled\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Pickled\">pickled<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ear\" title=\"Ear\">ear<\/a> to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Kingdom_House_of_Commons\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"United Kingdom House of Commons\">House of Commons<\/a>, whipping up war fever against <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spain\" title=\"Spain\">Spain<\/a>. To much cheering, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prime_Minister_of_the_United_Kingdom\" title=\"Prime Minister of the United Kingdom\">British Prime Minister<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Walpole\" title=\"Robert Walpole\">Robert Walpole<\/a>, reluctantly declared war on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/October_23\" title=\"October 23\">23 October<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1739\" title=\"1739\">1739<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The War of Jenkins&#8217; Ear was a conflict between Great Britain and Spain that lasted from 1739 to 1748.
